We have finished our first weekend of the 2017 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup! First off I want to thank the RBRC for once again giving me this opportunity! It was incredible being back around the World Champions and getting to speak with everyone around the paddock again!
Now, about my weekend! Overall we are very satisfied with the improvement I showed. We had the chance to do a Wet FP1 and my sensations there were great. Of course experience in the rain is important as there isn't as much track time under it. I finished P10 in the wet, but the most important was rest of sessions in dry.
FP2 and Qualifying was really important for getting the bike set-up on point and ready for a strong Race 1 and 2.
I'd say it was one of my most difficult QP sessions, I had to go into pits 3 times and finding the setting was tough. With the fantastic work of our suspension guy, Santi, we found the perfect set-up 5 minutes before the session ended. Unfortunately I only got up to P14 to start in the grid for Saturday and Sunday.
Although it wasn't the best position to start at for a good fight up front, I wasn't too worried as I knew my pace was for much better. I'm happy with how my Race 1 went as I had an awesome battle for P7. I was able to control the group the whole race, and although it was cut short with a red flag, I still finished first of the second group.
This gave me a positive confidence boost as it was a result I was looking to start the season with! For Race 2 I was under a great start as well. From P14 I was running P9 on Lap1. Some riders went wide on turn 4 and as I made my way up to P6 I got hit by my teammate. Of course this is racing and fortunately no one was seriously hurt! Although it ended as a trip to the hospital, I'm happy my pace was seen for a good position and I was with a fantastic rhythm and feeling with the KTM!
Our next stop is Assen! Can't wait to jump back on June 25/26 - I'll be keeping you all updated!
Thank you very much to the whole Red Bull Rookies Cup team, to Dorna and the Jerez Circuit, to the Hospital Puertas del Sur, all of my sponsors and supporters, and of course, my family!
