Blog | Sean Kelly leading from the front row in Assen

Hey Everyone!

Last weekend we had the 3rd round of the 2018 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup season. We were back at Assen!

Overall I ended up having what is by far my best weekend of the Rookies Cup so far. On Friday I was determined to make my best FP1/FP2/Qualifying as I knew that's what held me back in Mugello.

I tried my best to not waste any time and I finished our first session in P4. I was quiet surprised myself by my feeling with the bike and track. It was the first time I truly enjoyed Assen! I continued in this way throughout the day and I was able to mark my best qualifying ever, by putting myself on the front row! I would start in P3, just 0.09 off of Pole. The times were very close and I knew I had the perfect opportunity to run at the top. I was happy and excited!

In Race 1 I had a decent start, I was up in P2 and throughout the whole race I was fighting for the podium. Unfortunately I wasn't close enough in the last laps to make an attack but I crossed the line in P6, my best result so far and just 1 second off of podium.

For race 2 I had a different strategy and it went well, I was able to lead for the first time! It was a really nice feeling to be in front, and not only for a moment but for a few laps.

Half way through the race I had a small front tuck that took me out of the race. This was disappointing for me as I was again fighting for the podium, but we have to stay positive!

After all Assen marked an important step in my career and I'm looking forward to continuing in this way. Sachsenring is up next and is close, I will work hard so we are more ready than ever in Germany. The podium is close!

Thank you to the RBRC and the whole crew, my sponsor Pole Position Travel, my mechanic, and my family!
