The first tests on the bike are done. We started the racing season with a test on the Moto3 bike which we race in the ADAC Northern Europe Cup. Our first practice was on the 5th and 6th of March on the Alcarrás Circuit. The bike felt better than we expected and had a very good feeling.
I could feel that the training schedule for the winter break worked out pretty good and felt fit from the moment I started the bike. A few weeks later we had the team presentation for Ernst Dubbink Eveno Racing. Here we presented our team and the colours for our NEC bikes. We also talked about my new adventure coming up in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.
Racing bikes means working hard, so we spent the Easter holidays on the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya for a one day test, organised by the Dutch federation KNMV. During this test we improved the bikes and made some further adjustments and trained in longer runs to work on my consistency. April will be a very busy month because I compete in 2 different championships. Next to the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, I race in the ADAC Northern Europe Cup.
In the first weekend of April the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup season started. On Thursday we had the first photoshoot and the hand-out of the riding gear. On Friday I started the bike for the first time. During the first session I got used to the bike and tried to get familiar with the Red Bull KTM.
After this session the mechanics adjusted the braking and suspension for more stability and improved braking. We also fine-tuned the position of the handlebars and levers. When I noticed that the adjustments came out positive, my lap times dropped and I could gain more speed.
Late in the afternoon I suffered a crash in the 3rd corner on the Circuito De Jerez de la Frontera. I Bruised my ankle and wasn't able to ride anymore during the weekend. I returned home on Sunday to have a further medical check in the Netherlands.
In this check-up I was declared fit to race for the ADAC NEC season opener where I competed in the Moto3 Standard class. It was a difficult weekend due to the poor weather. The first race I was able to ride well, although the wet tyres wore out quite fast on the drying track. I finished 6th in my class in the first race.
The second race I started very well, but got hit by a fellow rider who had to move out of his line due to a crash in front of him. Too bad I was overtaking him and crashed out.
In Assen things went better and we had a good weekend where I took the fastest time in my class during qualifying. I finished 5th in my class for a seventh place overall. This also was a good training for the coming Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup event at the Circuit of Jerez.
I'm looking forward to coming weekend and can't wait to ride the Red Bull KTM again!
