What an awesome end to my 2015 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup year at the Motorland Aragon Circuit!
On Friday, Free Practise 1 and 2 went well. I had raced at Aragon earlier in the year in the Spanish National Championship.
The Rookies Cup team and I were able to find a setup for the bike quickly so that meant I was able to concentrate on giving feedback so we could improve the setup further. I was able to set a few really good laps in qualifying and ended the session on pole, breaking the track record by 0.1 seconds.
The first race started off well for me and I was in 3rd position but on the second lap the race was red flagged due to an incident. The restart was much better and I was in 1st position for most of the race.
On the last lap I was passed by two riders who had worked their way up using each other's slipstream but I hung onto 3rd position until the flag and got my first Rookies Cup podium.
The second race on the Sunday was also my 14th birthday. I was able to get a good start and I led for the first few laps. I then dropped down the group a little bit to follow and learn what the other riders were doing differently to me but with 7 laps to go I made a big mistake and ran off the track losing 4 seconds to the leader and in 8th place.
I then focused on catching the group again and set my fastest lap of the race, within 3 laps I had bridged the gap and was back in the fight for the win. On the last lap I started to make up positions and by the start of the back straight I had worked my way up to 3rd place. I crossed the line in 3rd position, only 0.144 seconds from the winner.
This weekend at Aragon has by far been my best weekend in the Rookies Cup and I was really happy to learn that I have been invited back by the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup team for the 2016 season.
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Rookies Cup team for an amazing year, my mechanic Juan, suspension tech Santi, my riding coaches Gustl and Dani and the Energy Station staff. I'm already looking forward to the pre-season tests next year.
See you then,
