I'm just back from my first ever round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Jerez.
When I first arrived I couldn't wait to get out on track and ride the Rookies Cup KTM Moto3 machine and I was also really excited to be in the MotoGP Paddock.
In FP1 and FP2 on Friday I struggled to find the pace I had set at the pre-season test and ended the day qualifying 21st on the grid which I was disappointed with but I was sure I could improve on my position in the race.
In Race 1 on Saturday I got a good start and managed to make up a few positions on the first couple of laps but then I made a small mistake and the group I was in all passed me and I was left 1.5 seconds behind them. I then started to get into a good rhythm and pull them back in.
I managed to pass all of the riders in that group and pulled in the gap to the next riders. Unfortunately there were not enough laps left in the race to catch and pass them but I was sure I could run at their pace in the next race. I finished in 17th position and was happy that I had made progress.
In Race 2 on Sunday I got another good start and made up several positions on the first couple of laps. Again I settled into a rhythm and was able to break away from the group I was in and pull a 5 second gap.
I started to catch the next group of riders but on the last 5 laps of the race my rear tyre started to slide and I was not confident to push any harder. Again I finished in 17th position.
It was a great experience and I'm looking forward now to taking what I have learned this weekend into the next round.
See you in Assen!!
