A couple of weeks ago I raced in the Moto3 class as a wild card at Philip Island, Australia. I enjoyed every bit of it and took as much as I could in.
On the Friday I had two 40 minute free practice sessions. In the first session I completed 8 laps around the awesome Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit but after trying to follow one of the front runners in the Moto3 class I crashed coming into Lukey Heights and could not get the bike going to complete the rest of the session.
Session two I got a better feeling for the bike and the track and set some quick lap times. In the session I finished 28th, which was good because I beat some of the permanent riders.
Saturday I had the third free practice and the qualifying session. During the third free practice session I changed the setup and found a really good setup for qualifying and improved my time. Then I had the qualifying. I felt good but could not place myself to get a good slipstream, which was needed to get a fast lap time on the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit. But I qualified 32nd on the grid.
Sunday I had a 20 minute warmup and the 23 lap race. The warmup was good because I could find different lines for the race. After that I had the race. I made a very good start and passed 8 people by the first lap but unfortunately I had a big moment on the second lap and nearly crashed.
My plan was to finish the race and gain as much experience as I could so I had to slow down and build a good rhythm again. Throughout the race I had a good battle with 4 riders and finished 28th.
I learnt so much from this weekend and know I have a lot more experience. I am very happy with my result as I was using a production KTM Moto3 250 and it shows how good the KTM bike is that anyone can buy.
I am looking forward to the 2015 season in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.
See you at the races Olly #45
