Blog | Collin Veijer ends his first Rookies Cup season with great pace in Valencia

Hi everyone,

We have finished the last races of the 2020 Rookies Cup season.

FP1 was an early one at 9:15 am with a not yet optimal temperature.

Despite this I was able to do a good constructive session and improved round by round, ending the session with P8.

In FP2 there was more grip and better conditions. In this session I tried to push more with a longer gearing, but because of this setting I had quite a bit of trouble with the rear sliding in several turns. Nevertheless I improved my time and reached P9.

Before Qualifying we set back the gearing which gave me a better feeling with the bike. I was in a good rhythm and on a strong lap but then there was a red flag and unfortunately I could not finish a really good lap. At the restart of qualifying, I was confident that it would go well but in the second lap – after a fast 1st sector - arriving at turn 6 I entered a bit too fast. I still tried to take the speed with me but on the exit it went wrong and I crashed with a highsider.

I was able to bring the bike back to the pit lane, where it could be repaired by the mechanics. After that I was able to make two more laps but I couldn't improve my time and had to start from P15. I had the speed but again it didn't work out in qualifying. In other words, I had to show what I got in the final 2 races of the season.

Race 1: I had a good start and could make up several positions immediately. The feeling with the front was not quite ok, it didn't feel stable. Still, I was able to keep up with the pace but I didn't feel like I was really able to attack. For sure I was very happy to finish in P6 while not feeling fully comfortable.

With some adjustments to the front of the bike, I started Race 2 in good spirits. The start was a bit less than Race 1 but I was still able to make up a number of places. Again there was a leading group of 10 riders and there were a lot of position changes. I felt good on the bike but I didn't want to overdo it and risk crashing in this last race of the season.

As in Race 1 I was able to finish P6, a pretty good result for a rookie in the series I think, and finishing in the top 10 of the championship is not bad at all.

Last but not least, I want to express my big thanks to the entire Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup crew for a great season!

I learned a lot, all was well organised and it's simply a dream come true to be able to race in such professional conditions. Even more, I am very proud to announce that in 2021 I can again participate in this fantastic program!

Also I want to thank all my sponsors and everyone else who help to make it possible for me to race. It's great to be home again after more than 7 weeks in Spain riding in the Rookies Cup and the CEV-ETC series but be assured that I will work hard this winter to prepare myself well for the new season!

Stay safe,
