Joe has fun even when he is not racing, "I love surfing and racketball. I also play bass with my brothers in our band Red Tambourine." At school his favourite subject is English and in racing his heroes are Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner, Ben Spies and Colin Edwards.
"My Dad got me a 50cc dirt bike when I was three years old. We live in the city where there aren't places close by to ride, so I rode in our tiny back yard and sometimes in the city park. After we watched the film "On any Sunday" we decided to try flat track, which I did on 50s and 65s. When the Supermoto craze hit the US, I also raced Supemoto before getting into mini road-racing riding a Metrakit 65."
He is clear where he sees his racing future. "I want to win the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and then get onto a Moto 3 team and then move to Moto 2 and then MotoGP."
Looking at what he learnt in 2012 he knows what he must do in 2013. "I ran more at the front in 2012 than I did in 2011. The big thing I learned was that in order to finish well, you have to get to the front as soon as possible."
"I think 2013 will be a big year for me. I tested a Moto3 bike in Spain in November and I think I can go well on one. I hope I can win the championship or finish top 3. I'd like to do a wildcard ride at one of the non-rookies GP rounds after I turn 16 in June. Obviously I'd like to ride in Moto3 in 2014."
