Blog | Olly Simpson better on a new bike in Silverstone

G'day everyone,

Over the 28th – 30th of August was the 5th round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup held at in the UK at the Silverstone circuit.

Friday consisted of two free practice sessions and one qualifying session. The weather was good and the sun was out and shining ready for the first 30 minutes of practice. I got used to the track and got a feel for the bike but after a couple of laps I felt there was something wrong with the bike.

The mechanical issues from Brno was still there. So after trying to do more laps the problem got worse and I had to pull into the pits. I was able to get on the spare bike and get one lap in and it felt miles better so I got to use it for the rest of the weekend.

Free practice 2, I got some good laps in and felt some setup changes and finished the session in 6th place. Qualifying I also found some good pace and got some good laps in so I was able to qualify in 7th for the race.

Race 1 I made a good start but was not aggressive enough on the first few laps and lost the front bunch and had a lonely race and finished the race in 7th.

Race 2 was completely different as it was in wet conditions so we were allowed three sighting laps and I felt good on them. We then had the sighting lap and I felt good on that too but on the second to last corner when I was coming out of the corner tucked the front and crashed and damaged the bike. I snapped the foot peg off and half the clutch lever. I also had to start the race from the rear of the grid. I tried as hard as I could but was too slow with the damage on the bike so after a few laps had to pull into the pits due to the damage.

It was not a good weekend and with three races left I am going to have to give it my all for them and try my best.
